Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-JOE) was ready to save the day on this week's Senate appropriations bill by voting against it. He justified his vote by arguing:
"At this critical moment, Congress should be providing all the resources that are needed by General Petraeus and our troops who are beginning to achieve success in Iraq...That is why I voted against the measure. It is my hope and desire that once the President vetoes this ill-advised and counterproductive legislation, cooler heads will prevail in Congress and we will truly support the troops and not undermine their mission with a deadline for defeat."
Holy Joe's self-aggrandizing selfless position was subsequently trumped by that turncoat, Sen. Chuck Hagel (RINO-Neb.), who prevented Vice President Cheney from being able to cast the tie-breaking vote this week on the appropriations bill.
Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-JOE) has once again decided that the path to victory in Iraq, much like his own electoral victory in 2006, requires that he go it alone and embark on a bold, new independent path...
After conferring with his wife, children, rabbi, and President Bush in the aftermath of this week's appropriation vote loss, Senator Lieberman reflected solemnly on the argument he made on the floor of the Senate on March 27, 2007:
...each of us has a responsibility to do what we believe is right—not what is easy...
...Even if you think that Iraq has nothing to do with the war on terrorism, surely all of us can unite around the proposition that we have a moral responsibility not to turn our backs on this...
...if anything, precisely because United States did invade Iraq, we are more, not less, responsible for stopping the atrocities unfolding there now. There can be no disentangling ourselves, no moral withdrawal, from Iraq...
...I ask those eager to wind up our commitments in Iraq, those determined to order a withdrawal: I ask you to think carefully about the consequences, not just geopolitical but moral, of what you are calling for.
We cannot redeploy from our moral responsibility to the Iraqis. It is contrary to our traditions; it is contrary to our values; and it is contrary to our interests...
Senator Lieberman agrees with his good friend and respected political analyst from Fox News that the appropriations vote was about pandering for votes in order to secure an electoral victory, rather than focusing on achieving a strategic military victory.
He is tired of having to pander and sell his soul in order to secure enough votes to keep his job. Democracy is for pansies and Churchillian appeaseniks.
Realizing that the fate of the world rests in his hands, Senator Lieberman is going to hold a press conference at 6pm this evening to announce his bold new plan for victory in Iraq. An advance copy of his speech reveals the following:
My fellow Americans. The Congress has betrayed you and our brave troops. I am sick and tired of serving in that abyss of appeasement. It is up to me to save you, them, and the world. To this end, I am immediately resigning my seat in the Senate and will be deploying to Iraq tomorrow with a security consulting firm so that I can protect our troops. I regret that I have but one life to give for my country. I bid you adieu.
